How do I zip or unzip a file?

One of the most common issues that we see here at Restored 316 comes before ever installing a site. Some computers, unfortunately, have a habit of automatically unzipping a file upon download. Which then can create an issue when one goes to upload our theme file into their WordPress account for usage. Here’s a quick rundown of how you can fix this.

How to zip (or compress) a file on a MAC or a PC computer

If you automatically download a file on your computer and the file unzips itself, fixing it is as simply as this:

  1. Find the file that you want to zip.
  2. Right click on it and find the command to compress the file and click that.
  3. A new compressed or zipped folder is created in the same location as the old one. If you want to rename it, right-click the folder, click Rename, and then type a new name.

Now  you can then drag and drop it wherever you need.

How to unzip a file on a MAC

To unzip a file (like your theme file to unlock some of the goodies that tend to be locked away, depending on your theme), simply double click it.

How to unzip (or decompress) a file on a PC

To open a zipped fileon a PC computer, you will need to drag the .zip file to your desktop. Once the file is on the desktop, it will unzip automatically. Then you can right click or double click to open it.
